Reading and discussion of selected dialogues in order to understand Plato's ongoing influence in our thought today.

Whitehead famously remarked that the European philosophical tradition consists in a series of footnotes to Plato. Though Whitehead surely overstates the case, it would be difficult to overestimate Plato,s influence on the western mind.

In this course we will indentify and reflect upon foundational concepts in Plato's thought an consider their ongoing presence in our life todagy. Discussions will focus on selections from Plato's Symposium, Republic, Philebus and Timaeus as well as on influential uses and critiques of Plato's thought during the past centery.

Dr Michael Bazemore received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Emory University under the supervison of Plato scholar Richard Paterson. He is currently Head of School at the Northcoast Preparatory Academy in Arcata, California, USA
